ILT Conference

A great two day conference that provoked alot of thinking, questioning and forward planning of how I want to use these in my class.  I really liked how all speakers where linked by the messages that they were sending out.

James Nottingham was one speaker that really caught my attention with his examples and ideas.  Points that I took on boards where:
  • Types of Praise.  James' example of this was of his daughter, the Ballerina, receiving different praise from the grandmother and himself.  All of what he said was new but it just made me be more aware of the praise I do give in and out of class.  By choosing the type of praise you give will have an impact on the effort given.
  • THE PIT.  This is what he calls the learning challenge.  In the Pit is the wobble zone where you use and develop resilience, determination and problem solving.  I used this in class at the start of term in class and the children could see straight away the meaning behind it.  We have talked about it several times and it popped up at interview time with parents when talking about goals.  They all understood that if it comes too easy what are you learning...do you get EUREKA!
Alison Mooney was  terrific speaker who talked about "Treating people as they want to be treated".  I loved her 4 personalities...Powerful, Precise, Playful and Peaceful.  It's amazing how you think about these when categorizing others you know!  I now know how all my family and friends work!!!  Really powerful in the class and I plan to use some of her lesson plan in class with the children's version of her book.

Wilson McCaskill was amasing again.  He is so passionate about what he does and this came through in everything he said.  The children love his games and are getting used to his language that even pops up in other areas in class.

Twitter and Skype set up.

Had a great afternoon, thanks to Mark Herring, looking at features of Twitter and setting up Skype.  I am already signed up to twitter but do not use it as much as I would like.  I like to think that I have eased myself in slowly and am taking steps to integrating it into my classroom.  Already the resources and link I have found just from clicking on links and checking out other peoples blogs is overwhelming.

I now have Skype downloaded and am using it for in weekends to become familiar with it.  Using it in class i the next step.  We have a Skype Party set up for a couple of weeks with another school in Australia so that will be exciting.  I look forward to connecting with other educators on twitter and then progress to communicating our classrooms through Skype and Twitter. Kath Murdoch Day

An Inquiry classroom - An inquiring teacher.....

Kath has a way of drawing you into everything that she says. Somethings that she talked about we had heard or read about (like some of the thinking tools) but alot of other ideas were new and really switched the light on. The way she spoke about 'Switch Ons' and how we all thought about our values and how that was a perfect way to introduce and maintain back into our daily plans.

The main part that really stuck with me was the reflection. It is something that is a goal of mine to do better within my teaching. If we don't model good reflection to our children how do they know the best way to do it and why. In my class the children have their individual blogs and as a team we are creating a reflection template that they can use each week to reflect on their learning in class. There are some really great class blogs out their to see how they do it. By the end of next week these will be up and running so check them out Room 7 Blogs.

To finish off this was taken from our notes on the day... "Inquiry as a way of being not a way of teaching."

My Challenge!

I have been reading blogs from Larry Fliegelman and Justin Tartel about their challenges to readers and themselves and have decided to set some for myself.  I have got into a better habit of checking blogs and tweets, clicking on one link, kept clicking and ended up miles from the original site.  This has been very exciting but I know that I am not the best at recording this all down on my Blog.  So my goals are to...

  • Record all my interesting sites and findings down, even if it just a couple of sentences.
  • Commenting on Blogs and Tweets.
  • Tweet about activities that are happening in my class.

The light goes on!

Working in class today to put keynote onto Blog through 'Slideshare.com'.  Followed all the instructions but was unable to get it showing up on Blog.  All that was happening was a jumble of letters etc.  Went to find my trusty ICT geek :-) at school...no where to be found!  Took me 10 minutes of figuring out for myself but finally found how to change it in the post options.  Very little thing but I was so excited.  A great example to share with the class on how we all have new learning  to do and sometimes there will not be that wonderful person there to guide you through tricky spots. Priceless Twitter Finds

The resources on Twitter are overwhelming me!  All in a good way though :-) Off a link from Professor Steve Wheeler tweets, I went into an amazing site that had an abundance of Web 2.0 Tools.  What excited me the most was that I know the children in my class will absolutely love them.  I can't wait to see what ways they can use them to show their learning.  Over the next couple of weeks check out our class blog to see what ideas they have come up with.

Kindergarten Blog

I was looking around the epal's website and came across this great blog that is from a Kindy.
It just confirmed my beliefs that anyone of any age can create a learning Blog or Wiki and show what new learning, wonderings and experiences they have. It really makes me excited about having our own class blog and children creating individual blogs. The potential is endless when it comes to what you can use them for. I am really looking forward to exploring all these opportunities as an individual in my own learning, as a group with my peers and with classes that I am a part of.
